Using AI for good not evil
By Liz McGrath, Principal Consultant, Hinchen Recruitment Group
In a galaxy, far, far away, well, around November 2022, ChatGPT was developed by OpenAI & released to the market. It was an incredibly innovative moment in time and took over social media, and the market, by storm. A brand-new way of generating ideas, suggestions, or formats, it was amazing. A colleague introduced it to me, and I was really impressed by its speed and the calibre of its content.
Most of you that know me, would say I am always open and interested in new technology. And applications. Tech is moving so fast, and you must keep up, for fear of being left behind. Applications & software have come a long way since computers were first introduced, which for me was when I was just leaving high school!
What I’ve come to learn is that new technology can certainly be used for good in our everyday lives, both personally and professionally. For me, I love tech and applications that can do the following:
- Save you time.
- Simple to use.
- Automate processes.
- Provide you with content or a framework when you’re stuck for ideas.
- And did I mention, save you time, which is something money can’t buy!
Although tools like ChatGPT are extremely innovative and exciting, it’s also important to remind ourselves what it isn’t. AI tools are just that, they’re tools, not replacements. We cannot rely on a tool for 100% of the content or work we produce; those important details still need to come from our own minds. Helping to re-structure something, approach it from a different angle or suggest alternatives makes it a very useful tool, but having it create the entire content for you is not the way to go. ChatGPT gets its information from people and people make mistakes, there’s no way to verify and check every piece of knowledge ChatGPT has, it simply collects information that’s out there. There’s a reason at the bottom of the program it says, “ChatGPT can make mistakes, consider checking important information”.
So, what I’ve learned so far:
- Ask the right questions, to get the right answers – be specific/accurate.
- Check everything. Never just ‘copy and paste’, use your own words to personalise the results and add in your own valuable insights.
- Use AI as a tool, not as a substitute or replacement.
- For me, AI is a powerful tool that can save you lots of time and provide creativity, when you’re stuck on a subject for ideas.
In conclusion, I’ve found ChatGPT to be a very useful tool in some of my day-to-day work, which saves me time and provides creativity when I’m stuck. If everyone continues to use it as its intended, I believe it’s a valuable tool. Stay aware of the risks and keep using your ideas to make great content, AI can’t replace that.
