Work type:  Full Time

Date posted:  19-May-2025

Location:  Brisbane - QLD

Industry: Insurance

Salary:

This international financial services organisation (and renowned employer of choice) is seeking a hands-on Operational Risk Manager to embed and lead Line 1 risk practices within its Recoveries and Settlements team. This is an exciting opportunity to take ownership of operational risk and compliance delivery in a fast-paced, customer-facing business.

Reporting to the General Manager, Third Party Recoveries & Settlements, this role is responsible for end-to-end operational risk management across the Recoveries and Settlements teams. Unlike Line 2 roles, this is fully embedded in the business and requires someone who thrives on execution, practical delivery, and direct partnership with operational leaders.

This is not a framework or policy advisory role—it’s about getting things done. You'll be the go-to person to drive proactive risk identification, lead compliance and incident responses, and build a culture of accountability and awareness across the function.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Risk Identification
Identify operational risks across systems, suppliers, and processes. Work with leaders to assess exposures and embed proactive risk thinking into daily operations.
  • Risk Assessment, Mitigation & Management
Develop and implement effective controls in partnership with business leaders. Ensure practical risk responses and clear ownership of actions aligned to Group Risk expectations.
  • Compliance Oversight
Monitor regulatory obligations (e.g., GICOP, Corporations Act), ensure controls are mapped and tested, and lead remediation initiatives with business-led accountability.
  • Monitoring, Reporting & Analysis
Track risk trends (e.g., privacy breaches, complaints) and prepare insightful reporting for senior leaders. Address findings from audits and drive improvements to prevent recurrence.
  • Incident Management
Oversee the incident lifecycle including root cause analysis, stakeholder communication, and reporting to breach committees or senior leadership where required.
  • Regulatory Compliance
Stay informed of relevant regulatory changes. Support the business in maintaining compliant processes and adjusting controls in line with new obligations.
  • Training & Awareness
Partner with internal technical training leads to build risk capability and awareness across teams. Support risk education initiatives and foster a culture of accountability.
What you will bring to this role:
  • You will be a delivery-oriented risk professional who has worked in regulated environments and understands the importance of practical execution over theory. You bring strong interpersonal skills, natural curiosity, and a passion for improving processes and embedding best practice.
  • Proven experience in Line 1 operational risk, compliance, or remediation roles
  • Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks relevant to financial services
  • Prior experience in operational risk management ideally within a financial services organisation
  • Ability to interpret complex obligations and design effective controls
  • Confident communication and stakeholder engagement, including reporting to senior leadership
  • Qualifications in business, commerce, law, or a related discipline desirable
What Success Looks Like in circa 12 Months
  • Operational risks are identified and linked to actionable control plans
  • Incident management processes are timely, accurate, and visible at executive level
  • Key compliance obligations are mapped and embedded across operations
  • Risk maturity has improved, with evidence of uplift in awareness and ownership across teams
  • Audit responses and stakeholder requests are met confidently and effectively
So what's in it for you?
  • The opportunity to report into an inspirational and collaborative executive who genuinely values collaboration and follow-through
  • An Impactful Role: Directly influence risk culture and resilience across critical claims functions
  • Leadership Scope: Manage one direct report and collaborate across Line 1–3 and technical training teams
  • Workplace Culture: High integrity, strong performance, and deeply collaborative leadership
  • Location: North Brisbane – fully on-site in purpose built offices
  • The opportunity to join a mature but evolving team with a clear mandate to improve performance and resilience
  • A culture of accountability, pace, and mutual support
