National Technical Manager - Environmental Services & Hazardous Waste

Our client is a rapidly growing environmental services organisation undertaking a significant expansion of its hazardous waste and liquid waste capabilities. This is a rare opportunity to build and lead a new technical function from the ground up, creating the systems, processes, compliance frameworks and team that will support the next phase of growth.
 
The role has a strong greenfield component and will suit a technically credible leader who enjoys building capability, influencing strategy and driving operational excellence.
 
The Opportunity
Reporting to the General Manager, you will take ownership of the technical, compliance and operational framework supporting hazardous waste, dangerous goods, liquid waste and environmental services operations.  You will establish and lead a team of technical specialists and chemists, while acting as the organisation's subject matter expert across environmental compliance, hazardous waste management, treatment methodologies, licensing and regulatory engagement.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the establishment and development of a new technical services function.
  • Build, mentor and lead a team of technical specialists and chemists.
  • Oversee hazardous waste, dangerous goods and liquid waste management activities.
  • Ensure compliance with EPA, environmental, WHS and transport regulations.
  • Manage environmental licences, permits, audits and reporting obligations.
  • Develop technical standards, operating procedures and best-practice frameworks.
  • Drive continuous improvement, operational efficiency and risk reduction initiatives.
  • Lead incident investigations, corrective actions and compliance programs.
  • Support commercial teams with technical expertise, tenders and customer solutions.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with regulators, industry bodies and specialist waste partners across Australia.
  • Contribute to sustainability initiatives, resource recovery programs and emerging treatment technologies.
  About You - To be successful, you will likely bring:
  • 8+ years' experience within hazardous waste, dangerous goods, environmental services, industrial processing, chemical operations, wastewater treatment or related industries.
  • Strong technical understanding of hazardous chemicals, dangerous goods and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Experience leading technical, operational or environmental teams.
  • Demonstrated capability establishing systems, processes and compliance frameworks.
  • Strong knowledge of EPA regulations, licensing and environmental governance.
  • Experience managing audits, investigations and regulatory relationships.
  • Commercial awareness with the ability to balance compliance, operational performance and customer outcomes.
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement and leadership capability.
  • A hands-on approach suited to a growing and evolving business environment.

Qualifications
Tertiary qualifications in one of the following disciplines are highly regarded:
  • Chemistry
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Environmental Science
  • Process Engineering
  • Related technical discipline
  • Additional qualifications in WHS, ICAM, HAZOP, Environmental Management or Project Management will be highly regarded.
